- Webinar is now online – The Contribution of Community-Led Total Sanitation to Ending Open Defecation: Findings of a Desk Review. WASHPaLS presented key findings from a desk review assessing the knowledge base on CLTS program performance. The findings and identified evidence gaps will inform the WASHPaLS research agenda for subsequent years of the project
- Small Water Enterprise (SWE) in Rural Rwanda: Business Development and Year-One Performance Evaluation of Nine Water Kiosks at Health Care Facilities. Int. J. Environ. Res. Public Health, December 16. This study evaluated SWEs in rural Rwanda, where nine health care facilities (HCF) owned and operated water kiosks supplying water from onsite water treatment systems (WTS).
- Enabling Factors for Sustaining Open Defecation-Free Communities in Rural Indonesia: A Cross-Sectional Study. Int. J. Environ. Res. Public Health, December 14. Results of multivariate logistic regression analyses indicated that (1) weaker social norms, as measured by respondents’ perceptions around latrine ownership coverage in their community, (2) a lack of all-year round water access, and (3) wealth levels (i.e., not being in the richest quintile), were found to be significantly associated with slippage occurrence.
- Best practices & lessons learned from implementing a handwashing with soap behaviour change project in Zimbabwe. EAWAG, June 2017. The campaign targeted two dimensions of handwashing with soap: the frequency of handwashing at critical moments and the technique of handwashing with soap.
- Toilet marketing campaigns in developing countries erode people’s dignity – this is not acceptable. The Conversation, December 6. But personal dignity is a human right that can be or is eroded by these practices. Reduced dignity is associated with poor physical and psychosocial well-being in the form of depression, social anxiety and alienation.
- No data, no progress. WASHwatch, December 19. Two years into the SDG era and we lack access to data that would allow us to monitor progress. More must be done by governments, donors and development partners to ensure that we leave no one behind. If there is no data, there will be no progress.
